Marble
You are the carver, and I the stone
Chip, chipping away at flesh and bone
My mouth twisted in perpetual bliss,
My legs crossed in obedience
Carve out my tired eyes,
Skin white as marble, pale and sun deprived

I cannot rest,

You’ll chip too much, and I’ll crumble inside
This is now my second home
You built me from scratch in your image alone
Sculpt my calloused, cramped fingers, pencil in hand,
To write your own words for you
A copy, another addition
To your statue garden of acquiescence

My mind is blank, my thoughts race no more
You think for me, no room for extempore
Void of color, cold to the touch
Harsh realities creeping, cracking foundations
It's strange how I came from under the ground,
Comforting naivety, that's where I was found
Starting off unshapen, taking no mold
Until you took me and brought me into tight hold

Taking the chisel, digging it in,
Making me something great while I implode within
I came from pressure, heat and limestone combined
But everyone has their breaking point, and I think i've reached mine

But from strife comes greatness, from knowledge comes power
So i'll take the file, and smooth out my own edges
Break from the cast and

 Become my own person.

Empanadas in Miami
The empanada flakes on my lip,
Rich carne, spices bursting on my tongue,
Oil dripping down my chin

My flip flops smack against the sidewalk,
Sandy toes
Sandy hair
Sandy clothes

I'm in the ocean, waves crashing against my thighs,
Pushing me back
Seaweed floats by,
I cringe and run out,
Mom urging me back in.

Im sharing a bed with my sister
Blankets pulled high,
“Don't cross my line!
You stay on your side,
I'll stay on mine!”

The next morning we’re up, at it again,
Mom opens the hotel door,
Empanadas in hand

S’mores and Bonfires
By the fireplace i sit
Chocolate, graham crackers, marshmallow fluff
My mouth tastes sweet
The wooden stick I hold
Above the flame
Is charred and splintered

The flames are hot
Gold, orange, red and blue
The sky is dark and stars freckle the sky
The fire reflects in their eyes,
Softening their gazes
Hearts ablaze

I sit, as laughter holds me
In its warm, comforting embrace
This is what it means
To be happy
To smile
To love and be loved

I'd like to stay here for a while

The fire dies and smoke
Kisses the sky
Charcoal and lighter fluid left behind
Sweets shared and secrets whispered
Coats buttoned
The night is done
We all go home
We’ve had our fun
